"Be more strategic." The feedback everyone gets, but few understand.

Most managers use it as a catch all during performance reviews. Most employees are left guessing, what does it even mean?
I recall a time when I had asked my manager what does being strategic actually look like?.
He said, "Watch how great leaders show up. You'll understand."
I watched a leader I admired command a room not with answers, but with thoughtful questions and painting the big picture with a calm demeanor. That changed everything for me. Mastering the shift from "doing" to "thinking strategically" is a game changer.
Here are 3 simple steps you can take to be strategic:
1️⃣ Ask better questions
Stop asking "what should I do?". Contribute by posing questions that show you as a thought leader.
Start asking:
→ Where is this taking us?
→ What are we missing?
→ Why are we doing it this way?
✅ Strategic people question the path, not just follow it.
2️⃣ Connect the dots
Stop working in isolation. Ask yourself
→ How does my work impact other teams and the business?
→ What patterns am I seeing across projects?
→ Where's the bigger opportunity everyone's missing?
✅ Learn to see the big picture not just the piece you are working on.
3️⃣ Bring Proposals, not complaints
Stop pointing out the problems. Instead, build a proposal showing
→ Here's what I see
→ Here are 3 options
→ Here's what I recommend and why
✅ Help making decisions easier for your manager and leadership, not harder.
👉 You don't need a title to be considered strategic. All you need is building small mindset shifts.
